The film – A doll is purchased by a happy couple. All is fine until their house gets attacked by satanic cultists. During the a ritual they leave a spirit so malevolent it brings terror to the couple’s life. They leave the spirit of a girl called Annabelle.
The true story – Two roommates claimed that their raggedy ann doll was possessed. They would leave the doll around the house and they would come home to find it had mysteriously moved. The Warrens collected the doll and placed it within their personal museum.

The true story – New York couple George and Kathy Lutz claimed that the house which they had moved into was haunted by an entity so intense in the end it drove them from their home. The home was rumoured to be haunted by the entities of a family who had died there by the hands of their father Ronald DeFeo Jr. He shot and killed six family members. The Lutzes claimed that they were then terrorized by unknown spirits. The Warrens investigated the house and found it to be true. They was met with doubt as many claimed it to be a hoax.
The Haunting in Connecticut
The Film – This tells of the story of the Snedeker family who rent a house in Connecticut. The family move in with their children. While in the home they find strange items in the basement of the room which their son Matt has chosen as his bedroom. He begins to have a series of visions which involve victims having symbols carved into their skin. After this they learn the house was a funeral home. The spirits of those killed in the house begin to terrorize the family and cause harm to them all.
The true story – This is very similar to the film of the Snedeker family. The family move into a house in Connecticut where they find the tools used by morticians. The elder son similarly began to experience visions and seeing ghosts. The hauntings got worse with both parents claiming that they had been violated by the spirits they inhabited in their home. They finally called in the help of the Warrens who claimed the house was infested with demons. The family after two years of hauntings decided to leave the home. No one else has since experienced hauntings there.
So when you see ‘Based on a true story’ on horror films just remember that it may not always be as bad as they are made out to be, Annabelle for example. This proves that films feed our fears of ghosts when really they may not be all that scary after all.
